anyone interested in walking on water?

Postby eggplanti9 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 11:37 am

MustangFord's "Shhh I'm trying to think" (GC1F83C) has been on my list for a long time. Rebeard mentioned to me that he found it by walking on water (something that I previously thought only Jesus did... but apparently Rebeard does too). Since this is the season for walking on water, would anyone else be interested in attempting this one if there's a day when the water would be right (but the weather not so cold that we'd freeze to death)? I think we could probably even talk Rebeard into going along too to help us find our way. Anyone interested?

Sure! Let me know if you are definitely going, when, and if you talk to Rebeard. I'd send him an email about it as soon as possible, because I think he only gets online every couple of days...unless you have his phone number.

Nope, I don't have his number. But I'm also not sure how soon I could do it, unless he and others interested are free on weekdays. This weekend we have family in for Clayton's baptism, and I won't be getting out for any caching. Next weekend, I'm still hoping to get out to Hocking Hills if the weather doesn't end up being as terrible as the last prediction you posted. So unless a weekday works for everyone, I'm thinking 1/23 or 24 at the soonest, or possibly 1/16 if I don't end up going to Ohio, but I want to wait and see how the weather and everything turns out before planning something else for that day. So for my part, I'm thinking it may be a little early to set a date. Just feeling out interest for now, though we can certainly discuss possible dates for it.

Actually, having never walked on a frozen pond before, I'm a little concerned about the ice breaking? Should we be? I don't know anything about how long it takes to freeze/thaw, or how thick it has to be to hold people?

Yeah. That's part of why I want Rebeard to go. I wouldn't trust my own (lack of) expertise on that, but I have a feeling that Rebeard probably would know how to judge it.

Okay, that's fine. You know how I worry about everything! Thanks! The Prince Gallitzin website says they do allow ice fishing and that the ice should be 4 inches thick. That's all I know. And, maybe we should bring a rope in case someone falls in?

Haha. True. That's okay.

Well, it can't hurt to be prepared, but... I sure hope nobody falls in, lol. That would really put a damper on things, particularly for whoever fell in! That would make for one cold day.

No idea how we'd measure for four inches, but I'm guessing we'd be able to tell and Rebeard would know. I've seen people walking on the ice there before and even tried to talk Megan into walking across once when we were caching.

I've been wanting to get this one for a while now - a friend & I tried the first part back around June or so, but didn't have much luck or long to hang around. I've talked to Mike (rebeard) about it a bit before & I think he'd probably be interested in tagging along, even if only to watch us suffer. I think I do actually have his number in my phone, as well. As long as this consistent cold keeps up, I wouldn't worry too much about the thickness of the ice - just a few inches can support a heck of a lot of weight. But, it's still never a bad idea to be prepared & have a backup plan, just in case. There are plenty of other caches up in the area, too, if we wanted to try to make a day (or at least a few hours) of it.

A weekday wouldn't really work for me, since I work 10a-6p from M-F. I haven't even been out caching in a few weeks, not since before Christmas when Andrew & I went up to Blue Knob. With the weather as it is, it's definitely a lot tougher to get out there, especially when it's always dark by the time I get out of work. So, I think a weekend day would probably work best for most people interested in going along and, knowing Central PA, I think we can count on this cold hanging around for a while longer. Sounds like it should be a fun adventure.
